Language Keepers began in 2006 as a collaboration between Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Dictionary co-authors David A. Francis, Robert M. Leavitt, and Margaret Apt, documentary filmmaker Ben Levine, and language educator Julia Schulz. Working with Northeast Historic Film, David Weiss, Executive Director, they secured funding from the National Science Foundation to make video recordings of Passamaquoddy and Maliseet speakers participating together in natural conversations. In 2010 Levine and Schulz founded Speaking Place to continue video documentation of language and traditional practices. For more information regarding methodology, please see Leavitt & Levine (2008) and Apt & Schulz (2009), on the “Links” page. DVDs of Language Keepers videos are available from Northeast Historic Film.
